New name, same great flavor!

April 2nd, 2025 Newsletter

Denali isn't the only thing getting a name change this year.

Everyone get your chips in the rack, line up single file, and follow me to our new room.

We are going to be moving our entire operation to a new club.  Don't worry, it will still be on PokerStars, it will still be a no rake inexpensive game, and it will be just as much if not more fun.  There will be some minor tweaks but we will get to those in the next newsletter.

A little history and then I will answer the "why?".  My good friend Sean O'Leary started this club in early 2020 after the shelter in place disease started.  Everyone was bored and he was motivated enough to get this going.  He named it Knights of Colombus (sic) because a lot of people that we expected to join had been players at a local Galveston game hosted by the Knights of Columbus.

Well, Sean has since moved on to important matters like Law and Fatherhood (not in that particular order) that get in the way of pissing away his time on a Tuesday night.  Unfortunately, he can not reassign the Manager position for the club nor change the name of the club.

Only the manager of the club can write on the board of the main page of the club lobby as the admins can only post on the message board like "wall".  Due to his aforementioned obligations, I hesitate to hassle him with these menial task any more than necessary.

Add to this that we are the "Freezeout Club" by name, it only made sense to make the move sooner rather than waiting another year when we (hopefully) have even more members.

Our first game at the new club will be on May 5th as that starts our new points season!  The rest of the tournaments in April will be at the Knights of Colombus Club!

With that said, I would like for people to start joining the new club.  You don't have to resign from the current one in order to do this!  Please follow the instructions below and join now.  That way, if you are having trouble you can reach out to me or Joe or Jonathan in the coming days and weeks.

Condolences...

With heartfelt empathy, this club wishes to send its condolences to club member Artie Brown.

Artie's wife Jessica passed away last month.  Jessica was a card player herself and I and others in this club had the pleasure of meeting and playing with her at the Knights of Columbus several times.

I think I speak for all of us when I say that we are wishing Artie and his family the very best.

Know a Game: Limit Holdem

Believe it or not, back in the day, most every poker game was a limit game.  Before NLH and PLO there was Limit Holdem and Limit Omaha.

Nowadays, unless you are in a H.O.R.S.E. event or in a specialty tournament at the WSOP, you aren't going to find a lot of Limit Holdem.

The game was soft solved in 2015 for heads up play but the masses had already shifted to NLH by then.

As far as strategy goes, the ranges look similar to NLH except for hands like AXs and small pocket pairs.  These hands aren't getting the implied odds to stack other players when at deep stacks because of the limited bet sizes.  Strong hands rule the day if you ever find yourself at a limit holdem game.  So it's ok to be a nit if you ever find yourself in 1988.

This week's Tip of the Cap goes to.... This entire club for bringing it every week. We are 4 weeks from the end of our points season and we still have 27 players showing up!  Thank you.

Coach's Corner

Here are a few general tips from Jonathan Little on running deep in a tournament.

Little is a great coach and does a good job of explaining each of these concepts.

I'm a new paragraph block.

And lastly.... these three things.

1.

2.

3.

At 100bbs at a 9 handed table, A10o is a fold from UTG.

This river is the nuts.

There are still 10 players that technically could win this points race.
