WSOP points race parameters

Talking WSOP prizes.....

The previous winners.  Legend has it they are still friends!

We are almost halfway through our fiscal WSOP points year.  That means it is time for me to crunch some numbers and set some parameters on this years prizes.

All of you who sloughed through last years discussion know that I will set some wide parameters today.  I will narrow them once or twice more as this year winds down.  I will set and announce the final prizes at the end of January.

The reason, of course, that this is a process rather than predetermined is two fold.  Firstly, ALL money goes back to the players and, second, because we don't have a set number of players each week, we don't know how much money we will have in 6.5 months.

The idea initially (2022) was to give the entire prize pool to the winner and say happy trails.  However, we saw our numbers dwindle towards the end of the points race as players who couldn't win the pool became disinterested and waited for the new season to start.  This is why we have the $500 drawing.

The $500 drawing is merit based as each point equals to one entry into the drawing.  So it pays to play through the season.  (it pays anyway as you get to play with the same players you will in the new season and can pick a few things up.)

Now to dream a bit...  I would really like to send 2 of our players to the WSOP on a package.  We got close last year and we are close again this year.  How close?  Let's break down the numbers....

Last year the prize pool was $5025 with $500 for the drawing, $750 for second and the winner getting $3775 (with an obligation to spend a minimum of $2k on buyins).  I feel like the package winner(s) needs AT LEAST $2500 to be able to go pay for a buyin or two and pay for airfare and hotel.  Of course, if the packages were smaller, the buyin obligation would be smaller as well.

So where are we?

After the tournament on the 15th of October, we were at $2630.  By the end of this month, we are probably looking at $2840.  With 6 months to go, if we double that amount, we would be looking at around $5680.  Keep in mind that there will be a $500 drawing that will cut into this a bit as well.

Hey guys, you can do math.  It is going to be another close call.  And that's IF we keep the numbers up.  If we don't make it to 2 packages, we will do a second place prize again.

So if you are still paying attention, here are the wide parameters of the prize pool:

There will be a $500 merit based drawing at the end of April.

There will be at least one prize package sending one of our players to the 2025 WSOP.  This package will include enough funds for airfare, lodging, and tournament buyins.

There will be a prize for the player who finishes second in the points race.  This prize may or may not be a package to play in the 2025 WSOP.

Stay tuned........

This week's Tip of the Cap goes to.... Chris McNeese.  He played in our game from his hospital bed the evening after surgery!  Dedication.... I love it!

Coach's Corner

So last time we talked about seat selection.  This week, we will cover the somewhat related subject of table selection.

Our man Sky at Smart Poker Study does a great job explaining this concept in lay terms that even I can understand.

This concept, of course doesn't help when it comes to our game or most tournament games.  However, if you find yourself in the cash game streets, this is important stuff.
