The News...

State of the Club Address.

Our game is progressing very nicely!

In April of 2000, during the peak of covid boredom, my close friend Sean started this game to give us something to do on Tuesdays and Thursdays (yes it was twice a week for a short time).

The first game was only 5 players over a zoom call.  We all loved poker and it was something fun to do.

The game grew to consistently host 9 or so players but stayed at that level for a year or so.  Typically we paid only first and second place back in those days.

Since then, our club (and game) has grown in every way.  While still charging zero rake, we have added this newsletter and corresponding blog.

In September of 2022, we added $5 to the buyin to fund a prize pool to send a player to the WSOP all expenses paid.  We have now provided that package 2 years in a row and are a third of the way through our race to see who gets the package (or packages) to the 2025 WSOP.

The game has grown from only Galvestonians to having players from, not only throughout Texas, but also Arizona, both Carolinas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and other hard to spell places.

The faces that we don't see as regularly are missed but having diversity and larger numbers really makes the game much more interesting.

The players we have added to the game recently are some of the best in our club and push us all to pay attention, adapt, and improve if we want to stay competitive.

This increased competitive spirit of the game keeps us on our toes while still knowing that we are battling players that we know and see (at least online) every week.  It makes me look forward to checking out the leaderboard and seeing who placed last week while congratulating my friends and pesky nemesis alike.

Thank you all for recruiting, engaging, and playing every week this game we all love.  ... that's the nuts!

Currently Joe Schwenk (JerzeJoe) is kicking all of our butts in the points race.  As he has been our most consistent winning player, I believe it is a great idea to watch and study his play as it works well.

We need to gang up on him because we can't let him win this thing!  j/k

This week's Tip of the Cap goes to.... Joe Schwenk for running the game while I was in Yellowstone with the First Lady.  Here's a shot of her on the natural bridge.

If you are reading this and don't play in our game click here for more information.

Zoom with Joe!  Joe hosts a free zoom meetup during our Tuesday Freezeout games.  Give it a try if that sounds like fun.

Coach's Corner

Check Raising is a part of this game we love.  The frequency of using this technique will depend a LOT on who your opponents are and their tendencies.

You don't want to do a lot of check raising with a polar range when you are against a station and you don't want to do it linearly against good opponents.

Jonathan breaks it down for us in this video that is a must watch.

Carve out 20 minutes, understand the content, implement the strategy, and you will see a lot of chips come your way when you deploy this properly.
