The News......

World Series of Poker recap.

Upon Arrival. Go Vols!

The First Lady.

Chris Cashing!

Having a quality Rail!

More fun than should be allowed.

Before we move on to other subject matter this year, I wanted to address the experience to be had at the WSOP.  I am very mindful that going on a weeklong vacation to play poker tournaments is not in everyone's budget nor want list.  Like seemingly everything in poker and life, there is a time and place.

That being said, without rush or haste, if you ever have the opportunity or desire, pick a year in the near or distant future to put yourself at the WSOP.  The environment is unlike any other I have experienced.

Perhaps it is the room full of people.  Or maybe it is Jack Effel presenting the latest gold bracelet.  Maybe it is the sound of thousands of chips riffling.

However, I believe it is the feeling of possibilities.  It is the optimism flowing from most every person in the room.  It's the feeling of competing against thousands of others that have the same dreams and desires as you.

Even though logic tells us that this dream is unlikely at best and far fetched at worst, it is reassuring that merit and ability rule this domain and that anyone can learn and make it a reality.

For me, it is this optimism and opportunity that keep me studying the game and learning and teaching and coaching and absorbing all that I can.  It is what fuels these words I write currently at 11:30pm.

Of course, the WSOP is just a brand.  And this brand has a downside. At times they treat you like cattle.  The dealers are far from the best.  The cards are bent (sometimes intentionally).  The lines are long.

But because of the crowd, and because of the bracelets, and because of the news coverage, and because of the potential glory, there is nothing like it.

Maybe I am over hyping it for those of you who have never witnessed it.  Maybe I am blowing it out of proportion for those who have.  Maybe.

What I do know is there are bucket list items for any hobby, sport, or industry.  When it comes to poker, we are fortunate to have THE bucket list item so close to home and without the need for a passport.

There are tournaments that meet most any budget.  The Gladiator bracelet event is a $300 buyin!  Even to just check it out and rail a friend is something that is  fun for me.

So if you have the desire, pick your year.  Even if it is 10 years from now..... or win this points race and make it 2025.  I hope to see you there!

I know this is a short newsletter.  I promise we will have some new interviews and more "What in the Word" coming soon.

This week's Tip of the Cap goes to.... Those dealing with Hurricane Beryl.  We hope that all of you are safe and have power and back to life as we know it soon!

Coach's Corner

Big blind defense frequency.  This is an introduction of sorts for how to and how often to defend your big blind from a Late position single raise open.  Daniel, as always, does a great job of giving a brief but detailed assessment of this common situation.

Keep in mind, this video was made before the Big Blind Ante was the standard and that's why he discusses antes plural.  This doesn't change the strategy though and online tournaments still use the individual ante.

I only mention this because in a tournament that doesn't have an ante, like our Tuesday Freezeout, the big blind should be defended less in this situation because there are less chips to "fight for".
