The News...  Jeff Johnson wins the $500 drawing.

He looks like he already knows where he will spend it.

Congratulations to Jeff Johnson (Stringer) for winning the $500 drawing.  He benefitted from having 11 entries representing his 11 points acquired through the year.

We are, of course doing it again so mark your calendars for every Tuesday!

What in the Word...?

Today lets discuss the term "3 Bet".  This compound of words leads a lot of beginner and intermediate players astray as to its meaning.

So much so, that lots of more seasoned players will use the term as a question to find out if the suspected beginner may indeed be a beginner or to simply try to figure out the "level" of another.  You will hear a Reg ask another player something like "Would you have 3 bet that preflop?" or "Do you think I should have 3 bet there as a bluff?"  If the player being asked looks confused or gives an answer that tells the questioner that she misunderstands the word (or knows exactly what it means) some degree of information is likely gained.

3 betting, at least in no limit holdem (NLH) is, in my opinion, actually a bit of a misnomer when it comes to preflop.  On it's face a 3 bet means the third bet (raise).  However, in NLH, the Big Blind counts as the first bet.  As we all know, the Big Blind is a forced bet or ante and doesn't represent any information as to the strength of the hand.  Despite my criticism of the term, it is here to stay so it is best to learn it in the way that it is used in our real world.

Let me give a few examples of a 3 bet in an attempt to clarify:

Ex. 1 Under the Gun (UTG) open raises and the Cutoff (CO) re raises.  The cutoff is 3 betting this hand.

Ex. 2 Action folds to the Button (BTN) who open raises and the Big Blind (BB) reraises.  The BB is 3 betting.

Ex. 3 Action folds to the Low Jack (LJ) who limps and the High Jack (HJ) over limps (also limps).  The action then folds to the Big Blind (BB) Who raises.  The LJ then reraises.  The LJ is 3 betting.  The BB is only 2 betting as the action had not been raised before.

The 3 Bet (3!) has nothing to do with the size of the reraise.  The 3! could be a min raise or it could be all in.  Many go through a period of misunderstanding a 3! to mean a raise to 3x.  This is admittedly confusing hence this very "What in the Word?" dedicated to the jargon.

As you probably noted, shorthand for a 3 bet is 3!  This information is only necessary to know if you are writing or reading hand analysis in chat groups or coaching materials.  However, as always, the more we know the better.

As a note and less discussed, in post flop play a 3! is the 3rd legitimate reraise.  So many people get this wrong that usually the situation has to be broken down as lots of people are calling the first reraise (the 2 bet) a 3 bet because of the bad lingo habits we are accustomed to preflop.

I know that is a lot of explanation for 1 simple phrase but I brought it up this early in this series because it is so often misused and misunderstood.  If I have failed to give you a good grasp of the term, I apologize and, more importantly, implore you to look it up at other source until you understand it.  I don't want one of our players being the one that is "read" in the situation above.  I would rather our members being the players that are the "readers" of others.

Take a look at the video in the Coach's Corner.  Lexy Gavin discusses 3 betting strategy.  Along with the strategy, lets all make sure we know what a 3! is and is not!

Does it seem like every time you get pocket kings, you 3 bet a loose raiser and everyone folds?

This may be because you aren't 3 betting enough.  If you are only doing it when you have premiums, you aren't 3 betting with a high enough frequency and therefore everyone folds to you because it happens so seldom.

This is a great video if you are looking to increase your 3 betting frequency.  Lexy, as always, is great at giving you the nuts and bolts of subject matter without sending you for your PHD.

Enjoy!
